16 Apr Bio Charcoal vis a vis Coal – What’s your Fuel Option
The awareness about eco-friendly fuel has increased ten folds after the Paris Climate Treaty signed on 22 April 2016 – Earth Day – at UN Headquarters in New York. The Paris Agreement, in seeking to strengthen the global response to climate change, reaffirms the goal of limiting global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees Celsius. To achieve this temperature goal, all countries have to contribute to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and Carbon Footprints and hence impetus on Eco friendly fuel replacing fossil fuel is on the rise.
It is our responsibility to handover a greener and cleaner environment to the next generation and it is indeed the right time to begin the momentum of change.
Fossil fuel for long has supported development all around. It powered the world for decades, but at an enormous cost. The cost was not limited to the extraction and purification of the fossil fuel, but also extended to the other aspects of health and environmental impact, air and water pollution, global warming and the environment degradation perse.
Thankfully, the whole world realized the risks of using fossil fuel in the late ‘70s and everyone started thinking about safer and better fuel options.
A few Charcoal suppliers in India are producing good-quality natural charcoal which needs to be promoted as much as possible.
The significant impact of fossil fuel
Whether it is coal or petroleum, there are long-term impacts of using them. Studies say that in a country like the USA, there are vast coal reserves. They fulfill half of the electricity needs of the country.
Indeed, the country has an abundant quantity of coal; it is not a ‘clean’ source of energy. The coal alone is responsible for 25% of the total emissions that cause global warming. And 80 percent of it is contributed by power plants only. It is scary!
Not only that, coal mining causes a permanent change in the landscape. Coal releases toxins while burning and the thermal electricity has a huge demand for water.
All this adds up to a tremendous impact on the surroundings.
Petroleum products and natural gas generate harmful emissions that contribute to global warming. Hence, it is a far less attractive solution from the environment protection perspective.
Also, they can’t play any role in producing electricity which is a big need.
Though a few Bio fuel companies in India are generating biofuel, its availability and compatibility are two big issues.
